Sassafras is a plant native to Eastern North America and Asia. It is known to the Kituwah or Aniyvwiya people of the Southeastern US, as a blood purifier for skin problems, fever, and urinary issues. The Asian varieties of Sassafras are used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for rheumatism and trauma. Today, the tree is endangered due to deforestation and overuse.
Modern research shows the oil, roots and bark of sassafras to be analgesic and antiseptic. Until it was found to be carcinogenic it was also used to create the root beer flavour.
Safrole is the chemical in sassafras that is used as a precursor in the synthesis of 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine. MDMA is a potent empathogen–entactogen with stimulant properties. The effects include: altered sensations, increased energy, empathy, and pleasure.
